Implementation & data access

The ABL testbed is conducted at Institut Pierre Simon Laplace (IPSL) under the scientific lead of Simone Kotthaus with support from the team of the SIRTA observatory (Martial Haeffelin, Marc-Antoine Drouin, Jean-Charles Dupont). Melania Van Hove (IPSL) is performing data analysis and algorithm evaluation. The AERIS/ESPRI Data and Services Centre is responsible for the database management, algorithm implementation and quicklook production.

Observations are collected by a large number of individual institutions and national meteorological services (see ABL testbed networks). Data are uploaded in near real-time to the EUMETNET E-PROFILE data hub operated at the Met Office where they are converted into common netCDF file formats and again transferred to the ESPRI data centre.

The ABL testbed is currently implemented for two networks which are covering the European scale and the regional scale, respectively.

A large number of partners support the ABL testbed, implemented at AERIS/ESPRI.

  • Funding support is provided by IPSL, ICOS, ACTRIS, and E-PROFILE.
  • EUMETNET E-PROFILE are actively engaged through the management and formatting of the raw data.
  • The EU COST action PROBE, EUMETNET E-PROFILE and ACTRIS contribute with tools and expertise.
  • The ABL testbed works in close collaboration with the instrument manufacturers, including Vaisala and Lufft.

Data access

  • Results from the ABL testbed are freely accessible for scientific applications.
  • Data are provided as annual netCDF files, organised by station.
  • To gain access to results from the ABL testbed data, please email simone.kotthaus@ipsl.fr.
